Barbara Partee
Barbara Partee studied syntax with Chomsky at MIT (Ph.D. 1965), then moved into semantics after exposure to Montague’s work at UCLA, where she taught 1965 - 1972. Her major early contributions involved the synthesis of Chomskyan syntax with Montague's semantics, bringing formal semantics into linguistics. Her research interests center on formal semantics and its connections with syntax, pragmatics, logic, philosophy, and cognitive science. Partee has been at UMass Amherst since 1972, Emerita since 2004. She was a Visiting Professor in Mexico, Prague, Leipzig, and for 16 semesters in Moscow. She and Vladimir Borschev co-taught at NYI in 2003 and 2005. Partee has received six honorary doctorates and is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the British Academy, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was President of the Linguistic Society of America in 1986.
